Anna Omazic
Associate Professor Anna Omazic work as a senior researcher at the Swedish Veterinary Agency. She earned her PhD in Animal Science from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in 2013. In 2018, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Swedish Veterinary Agency (SVA), where her research focused on assessing the effects of climate change on the geographic distribution and epidemiology of human and animal infectious diseases in the Nordic region. In 2025, she was appointed Associate Professor in vector-borne zoonoses at SLU.
Her research is conducted in both national and international contexts and is grounded in a One Health perspective—an integrated framework aimed at optimizing the health of humans, animals, and the environment. She is currently developing and implementing innovative methodologies that combine machine learning, artificial intelligence, and citizen science to improve the understanding of the emergence and transmission of tick-borne pathogens. She is also involved in projects focusing on surveillance of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and the identification of high-risk areas for TBE in Sweden. In addition, she contributes to research projects aimed at assessing and mitigating the impact of tick-borne anaplasmosis on the productivity, health, and welfare of grazing animals.
She has extensive experience in citizen science and coordinates the initiative ‘Rapportera Fästing’ (“Report Tick”), an online platform enabling the public to report tick findings over time across Sweden. The initiative supports long-term monitoring of tick distribution and activity, including both endemic tick species and the introduction of non-endemic species. Dissemination of research findings to diverse target groups through academic and popular science channels is a central component of her work. She has published more than 25 peer-reviewed scientific articles and numerous popular science publications. She has also contributed to a wide range of media outreach activities, including national radio and television interviews and social media communication, and was awarded the ScienceCommunicator of the Year prize at SVA in 2024.
