Carla Maia
Carla Maia, DVM, MSc, PhD, is a European Veterinary Parasitology Specialist and Principal Researcher with Habilitation at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, NOVA University of Lisbon. Her research focuses on vector-borne diseases, including those transmitted by sand flies, ticks, and fleas, as well as the One Health impacts of climate change.
She has coordinated and collaborated on several European projects addressing climate-driven health risks and strengthening planetary health and health system resilience, including Horizon Europe initiatives such as CLIMOS, PLANET4HEALTH, and ISMED-CLIM. Her work advances multidisciplinary and translational research aimed at improving the surveillance, prevention, and response to emerging vector-borne infectious diseases.
Dr. Maia has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters in parasitology, tropical medicine, and infectious diseases. She has supervised postgraduate students, serves on scientific and ethics committees, and acts as editor and reviewer for international journals.
