Jacinto Gomes

Escola Superior de Biociências de Elvas (Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre)

Veterinarian with expertise in parasitology, infectious diseases, and molecular epidemiology, combining a strong background in applied research with leadership in diagnostic laboratory settings. He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, and holds a Master’s degree in Medical Parasitology from IHMT (NOVA University of Lisbon), as well as a PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Lisbon.

From 2009 to 2021, he served as Technical Manager of the Parasitology Laboratory at the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV), where he also headed the National Reference Laboratory for Parasitic Diseases. In these roles, he was responsible for the nationwide diagnosis and surveillance of parasitic infections, including zoonoses, as well as for the implementation and validation of diagnostic methodologies, laboratory accreditation processes, and professional training.

He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Escola Superior de Biociências de Elvas (Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre), an integrated member of the VALORIZA research unit, and a collaborating researcher at CIISA (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon). His research focuses on the epidemiology, genetic diversity, and impact of parasitic and vector-borne diseases, with particular emphasis on tick-borne pathogens affecting domestic animals.

He has led and participated in national and European research projects, including initiatives under the EJP One Health framework, and is actively involved in international expert networks. He has supervised postgraduate students and authored several peer-reviewed scientific publications.
